Buying prescription glasses online - a review of eyewear retailers

Matthew Curry has posted on Econsultancy.com a really descriptive review of his experience buying a new pair of prescription eye glasses from online retailers. It covers a lot of points that I agree with such as:

- Virtual Mirrors and Actual glasses on Actual people
People don't buy a particular frame because it looks good on a shelf or behind a lightbox. They pay top dollar for glasses frames because it makes their face look good. One of the biggest barriers of online eyewear retailers is that you cannot try on the glasses, as opposed to an offline store where you just pick up the glasses instore, pop it on and check yourself out in the mirror.

Takeout for online stores: Please offer the virtual mirror or at the very least feature photos of people with the glasses on.

- Face Shapes
Matthew doesn't believe that face shapes contribute at all to helping choose the right frame for your face. I'm still trying to figure out what my face shape is - I can never see myself in those Round/Heart/Square face diagrams.

However, a trick I learnt from my boyfriend who used to work at Sunglass Hut many years ago is to match your glasses with the shape/curve of your eyebrows.

I look forward to reading Matthew's follow up post which will be about the delivery of his order and the actual goods itself.

What has been your experience ordering glasses online? Or even better for me personally, what's your trick to finding your face shape besides looking at clip art type figures?

Jennifer Aniston looks good in casual jeans and glasses

Jennifer Aniston was spotted in LA in casual wear and glasses. I think she looks good in glasses and seems happy in these photos. Jennifer is currently rehearsing with Adam Sandler for their upcoming movie "Just Go With It".

A tribute to girls who wear glasses

The guys at Jezebel have written up a loving tribute to favourite women and their iconic spectacles. The article features Lisa Loeb (remember her from the 90s soundtrack to Reality Bites - Stay I'll Miss You), Carrie Donovan (style editor for New York Times Magazine) and Rachel Maddow from MSNBC.

Would love to have seen Tina Fey featured (gotta love Liz Lemon's specs) but thank god Sarah Palin was not featured.

Celebrity ladies with glasses - I salute you! Carry the flag high and proud :)

The Wipe Shirt - No more dirty eye glasses

I am guilty of using my tshirt to wipe my glasses if I don't have a proper cleaning cloth handy. It's not good for the lenses as it may scratch the protective coat. Sometimes it may even scratch your lens (I've had that happen to me once - luckily it was done in an area where my eye doesn't look through).

Which is why I love the practically (not too sure about the fashion though) of this "Wipe Shirt". Not surprising at all it's come from the home of crazy inventions: Japan.

There are 2 shirt types available to buy. You can either have the microfiber cloth stitched onto the sleeve or onto the bottom of your shirt.

Red Carpet at the Oscars 2010

Let's check out what the stars wore in terms of eyeglasses at this year's Oscars.

Even Mr. Avatar himself Sam Worthington needs a bit of help seeing. "I have to wear glasses and I only got them two days before so I could read the autocue and not stuff up," he said. "The first time I met her (Jennifer Lopez) was in the middle of the stage, and when I put the glasses on I could see her clearly, and that's when it suddenly hit me and went, 'This is damn cool'."

Funny tweet during the Oscars from The Office actor-writer @mindykaling "Oh, Sam Worthington, your glasses make me think you’re imperfect and therefore accessible.”

Do you know what brand/type these celebrities are wearing? Please let me know in the comments and any other stars I missed at the 82nd Academy Awards.

Vanity is stopping men from getting their eyes checked

Free health care clinic draws thousands in Inglewood, California
News.com.au are reporting that a poll conducted by Specsavers showed that 13% of Australian men avoid the optometrist because they're afraid they'll be told they need glasses.

Seriously, what's the big deal for having to wear glasses?

I've been wearing them since I was 11. It's all about finding the right pair of specs to suit your face. Also with geek chic in fashion and all the celebrities wearing them proudly, there is no longer that nerdy stigma associated with wearing eyeglasses.

Bulk billing/Medicare for eye checks are provided by most optometrists in Australia so the test won't have to cost you a thing.
